Below are some of the textures I was experimenting with. Will hopefully be able to use them as backgrounds. Also, some experiments on image creation.

It took me a while to decide which book I wanted to do for this project. There were a few factors, it was suggested I do a contemporary book, and I wanted it to be thought provoking. Also futuristic or sci-fi helps when illustrating because it leaves scope for the imagination. I wrote a big list of possible books, including suggestions from others and then began eliminating them. The Hunger Games seems to fit the requirements, so I read the three books as quickly as possible and decided that yes, I could have a go at illustrating it. It had some good descriptions, some thought provoking themes and some references to other culture to draw inspiration from. Unfortunately after this I was unable to use the internet for two weeks as I was away, and that hindered research a lot, so I started designing anyway. I had mixed feedback but decided to take a step back and do some thorough research. I've been experimenting a little more so I'll include some pictures of my research and some samples of the experiments
I have now finished Batiste! To view the website, go to www.batisteadventure.weebly.com. Here are my finished designs in the large version. Each design has two other sizes as well which are slightly different to due to proportions.
I haven't posted for quite some time, so just to update on the project so far here is some of my research and also some images I've been playing with to try and get a feel for each continent. Oh, I decided to do a set of four continents!
Just to show that I haven't ignored the new project because I can't let go of the old, here is the D&AD competition I've chosen, Batiste Dry Shampoo package design. It's essentially a graphic design brief but I enjoyed the packaging project last year, so why not! They ask that four new bottles each to suit three sizes and a website is designed. Their bottles are highly patterned, so I've been looking at different patterns and also at groups of four such as earth wind fire and water, four seasons etc. I've been looking at the patterns of different countries, such as aboriginal art, Indian henna, and Japanese silk.
I've been playing around with the scent organ idea but decided I didn't like it - didn't suit the image style. My other one is "there... lay Lenina, fast asleep". I like the idea of this one, but struggling to work out the best composition. I'd like to put Lenina at a different angle but as the image style is very flat, that wouldn't work as well as profile. (I'm supposed to be leaving this project behind now and starting the next one, no chance, I can't let something go - I'm too obsessive, that's why it's taken so long!)
I just thought I'd add some of the thumbnail sketches to show how I got my final(ish) geometric mushrooms sketch and how I'm getting on with the others.
